AGEIA PhysX: new details and parallels with SLI
Yesterday, Ageia announced the sale of its physical accelerator (PPU) PhysX, after which many sources tried to analyze everything that is known about it today and predict its future. Let’s try to summarize the few specific information that is available today about PhysX.

Secondly, the developer emphasizes that PhysX cores are optimized specifically for multithreaded physics computing. At the same time, at the moment there is no information whether the chip is really multi-core, or whether we are talking about independent physical pipelines, which seems more likely.
Third, the manufacturer promises a wide device memory bus with fast random access. In the case of processing physical objects, the processor’s memory accesses are random, which was taken into account when developing the accelerator.
We have written about the declared advantages of PhysX over graphics accelerators, now we will mention the disadvantages of GPUs in terms of working with physics, which are hidden in them. Currently, when developing the architecture of video adapters, more and more attention is paid to the performance of pixel units, while texturing is fading into the background. This approach reduces the need for a wide GPU bus, on which physical computing is very demanding. In addition, the GPU performs physical calculations through the Direct3D API. This requires converting the “physical” language into pixel shaders, which slows down the processing speed and imposes restrictions on the complexity of the physical calculations available to the GPU. According to Ageia, video cards will only have access to relatively simple calculations for processing particles, effects and static geometry. In addition, updating the Direct3D API will require updating the physical core of Havok FX to work correctly, PhysX does not depend on the DirectX version.
Unfortunately, there are no tests yet that could show how true the words Ageia are. After all, PhysX at first, according to sources, will cost about $ 250, which is only $ 50 less than the recommended cost of 7900GT.
In terms of availability on the market, Ageia said literally the following: Alienware begins accepting pre-orders for ready-made PCs with PhysX installed on March 22.
