Hynix and Samsung believe in infinity ..

…flash memory demand.

The source quotes South Korean manufacturers as predicting “endless” demand for their products in light of the explosive growth in consumption of cell phones, MP3 players, USB sticks and other devices using NAND flash memory.

As you know, Hynix Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics independently develop and market NAND memory components, hoping that these products will replace NOR technology from cell phones, and hard drives from MP3 players. Samsung is striving to further accelerate NAND adoption by cutting prices by about 40% over the year, according to the head of Flash and SRAM.

For a long time, flash memory cards and USB sticks were the main consumers. These applications accounted for 56% and 20% of total NAND consumption in 2021, according to iSuppli. The situation changed dramatically with the rise in popularity of portable MP3 players. In 2021, this type of product should become the second largest consumer of flash memory.

Recall that one of the leading manufacturers of MP3 players, Apple, recently switched to NAND entirely, eliminating the use of hard drives in its iPod series. According to some reports, Apple will soon introduce a new version of the popular product, this time – with video playback, and again – based on flash memory. Rapid move to NAND has created a favorable situation for Samsung, one of the main suppliers of memory chips for the Apple iPod.

South Korean manufacturer manufactures 16-gigabit NAND modules for Apple, made using multilevel cell (MLC) technology. If earlier Samsung manufactured NAND memory mainly using single-level cell (SLC) technology, then the demand from Apple and other consumers prompted the company to adopt a more aggressive plan to master the new technology, which, by the way, is more economical than SLC.

In turn, the increase in production of more capacious and economical memory allows the manufacturer to attack those market sectors where hard drives have traditionally settled. Samsung says bluntly: “We want to replace the hard drive”.

The reasons for such statements are obvious: Samsung has three 300-mm factories, each of which is capable of producing 40,000 plates per month. About half of this is used for flash memory and half for DRAM.
