For many observers, this message came as a surprise – until now, it was believed that SMIC, like other Chinese manufacturers, are lagging behind world leaders in technological terms, which is not due to a lack of research potential, but to the fact that the Chinese prefer to use already “tested” technologies – due to their lower cost compared to new technological processes, the cost of which includes the cost of labor of researchers and developers. By the way, TSMC and UMC started shipping trial samples of 65nm chips quite recently – TSMC completed testing of the CyberShuttle process this month, and UMC released the first 65nm prototypes last week.

However, SMIC sees a definite benefit in accelerating the transition to 65-nm technological standards – a decrease in the size of the element allows you to place more chips on a 300-mm (or 200-mm) wafer, which also reduces their cost. SMIC is targeting its 65nm process technology to those customers who require a large number of semiconductor chips.

It is curious, however, that SMIC, by and large, does not even have experience in manufacturing at 90nm standards – pilot production in compliance with the 90nm process will begin later this year, commercial chips will be “stamped” even later. Only now SMIC has managed to achieve an acceptable yield of suitable 90nm chips, but something will be with a 65nm process?

One way or another, but today it is known that, according to 90nm standards, SMIC plans to master the production of 2-Gbit NAND flash memory licensed from Saifun Semiconductors. In addition, SMIC has signed a contract with Elpida to move its production from 100nm to 90nm at Fab 4 in Beijing.
