Novell Launches Open Source Project to Secure Linux Applications

Novell Announces AppArmor, a New Open Source Project to Harden Modern Linux Applications. This project is based on the key components of the Novell AppArmor structure, which the corporation has donated to the open source community.

Novell AppArmor is the only enterprise Linux application security solution that can be deployed in hours, rather than days, and done cost-effectively, even without deep Linux and security knowledge and experience.

Linux application security technology is vital to protect Linux systems from external or internal attacks, viruses, and malware. This technology fills an important gap in open source offerings by providing easy-to-use configuration and monitoring tools along with tight integration with the Linux operating system. As a result, enterprises are able to mitigate threats, protect critical corporate data, reduce security administration costs, and comply with government regulations.

Apps have become a prime target for cybercriminals attempting to intrude into enterprise and government networks, according to a recent report from the SANS Institute. AppArmor protects critical data on the Linux platform by ensuring that application bugs are not exploited by attackers, easily protecting applications from intrusions and threats, and without forcing IT staff to resort to emergency patching. Novell security makes security easy enough to be applied widely, rather than being disabled and ignored, as is often the case with sophisticated access control systems like SELinux.

The AppArmor project is the latest addition to Novell’s portfolio of open source initiatives, including the fast-growing openSUSE project. A community-driven project that gives them full access to the latest AppArmor code and tools to learn, test, and further develop AppArmor technology.

Industry leaders express strong support for the AppArmor project and believe that this project will create the best technologies for protecting sensitive data in enterprise Linux systems. Novell AppArmor is now shipped with Novell SUSE Linux 10.0, a Linux distribution publicly available at http: // www.opensuse.org, and as part of Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 Service Pack 3 (SP3). The AppArmor project is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). To join the community and access the software, please visit the website.
