A group of scientists from Stanford University has developed a new technology that in the future will help to effectively deal with one of the main defects of photographs – lack of sharpness.
All existing software methods for enhancing clarity, as you know, negatively affect the detail and “noise” of the image.
For a radical solution to the problem of sharpness, scientists proposed to place between the camera lens and the matrix an array of 90 thousand miniature lenses measuring 125 micrometers each. In the process of shooting, the electronics measure and memorize the angles at which the rays of light fall on each of the microlenses. In addition, the intensity of illumination at all points is remembered.
These data are necessary for the further operation of special software that calculates the image parameters taking into account the information received and restores the sharpness of the photograph.
If necessary, the technology can be used to correct certain areas of the image, improving, for example, the clarity of the background or sharpening the selected object. In practice, the photographer gets a powerful tool for creativity – the ability to control the depth of field (DOF) regardless of the shooting conditions.
The developers assume that in the future their technology will find application in professional digital cameras and video surveillance systems.
