Intel: good for the countryside

Patrick Gelsinger, vice president of Intel, said the company has developed a low-cost personal computer specifically for rural India.

India currently has 9 computers per 1000 people. The main reason hindering the increase in the number of computers is their cost – it is too high for the majority of the population. Although the price of the new Intel product has not yet been announced, it is not expected to exceed INR 10,000 ($ 220).

The commercial launch of the project was preceded by testing in 10 localities across the country. Reportedly, in addition to the usual functions, the computer will be equipped with means for wireless Internet access in rural areas and in remote areas. Given the tense power situation in rural India, the computer is designed to be powered by car batteries. The design feature, which, according to the developers, is capable of withstanding the hot Indian climate, is the dust-proof housing, which will also have to resist insect attacks.

The production of a computer for the village will begin in December. Well, it seems that Intel is not discouraged: losing the high-performance server market under the onslaught of AMD, the company has found a new market niche for its products.
