AMD has added to the family: another triplet of processors
AMD today announced three new dual-core microprocessors to join the AMD Opteron family of leading x86-compatible products in performance and power consumption.
The most productive among the three new products is the AMD Opteron Model 885 processor. It is designed for enterprise-class servers supporting up to 8 processors (16 cores). The second microprocessor introduced today is aimed at the mid-market segment – AMD Opteron Model 285. It is designed for dual-processor (quad-core) workstations and servers. Closing the top three is the AMD Opteron Model 185 processor, which can become the basis for single-processor (dual-core) servers and workstations.
The clock speed of all three models is 2.6 GHz. The press release emphasizes that AMD engineers have managed to keep the heat dissipation of the new models within the “standard range” (95W).
Introducing the new processors, Randy Allen, AMD’s VP of Servers and Workstations, said: “AMD integrates two AMD Opteron processor cores into a single die to enable them to communicate at maximum speed. This means that AMD Dual-Core Opteron processors are the only true dual-core x86-compatible systems available to consumers today … “
AMD Opteron Model 885 and 285 available to order. Their price in a batch of 1000 pieces is 2149 and 1051 dollars, respectively. Model 185 will be on sale within a month. The price of this microprocessor is still unknown.
IBM, Sun Microsystems and HP have already announced the release of servers and workstations based on new AMD microprocessors.
