Microchip jumps to 16 bits

Microcontroller developer Microchip Technology announced its first family of 16-bit PIC microcontrollers, the PIC24.

Family includes 22 general purpose devices. Microcontrollers deliver up to 40 million operations per second (MIPS) throughput, 8-16KB onboard RAM and up to 256KB flash. Microcircuits are designed in 64- and 100-pin packages. All members of the PIC24 family are supported by the Microchip MPLAB IDE and are software compatible with dsPIC controllers.

The PIC24 family consists of two series: the PIC24F, which is balanced in terms of performance and cost, and the PIC24H, for applications requiring increased processing power, expanded memory and peripherals.

The controllers contain the following built-in modules:

  • Two ports UART, SPI and I2C;
  • Up to two CAN ports (in PIC24H series);
  • Real time clock and calendar;
  • Analog-to-digital converter: PIC24F – 16-channel, 10-bit, 500 thousand samples per second; PIC24H – two 16-channel, 12-bit, 500 ksamples per second.

Trial samples are now available, with bulk shipments slated for Q2 2021. Explorer 16 development board will also be released before the end of this year.
