Originally named Newcard (and this is the name under which the technology was presented in February 2021 at the Intel Developer Forum), ExpressCard is a development of the concept of hot-swappable expansion cards proposed by PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association). Our colleagues’ website Digi Times published an interview with Brad Saunders, chairman of PCMCIA and senior architect of Intel’s mobile solutions group, which provides some interesting facts and considerations about the current state of the technology and its future. Let’s summarize some of the information contained in this interview:

  • Currently, ExpressCard technology is not widespread. However, there are an increasing number of products equipped with the appropriate slot, as well as an increasing number of applications requiring ExpressCard expansion cards.
  • To date, 27 different PCMCIA member companies have presented about 112 ExpressCard solutions, of which 77 are host systems. Products tested include Belkin, Compal Electronics, DataFab, SCM Microsystems and SIIG.
  • The most popular applications for ExpressCard cards are Gigabit Ethernet adapters, attachable storage systems, parallel, serial, IEEE 1394 and serial ATA (SATA) port adapters, flash memory card readers, TV tuners, measurement equipment. At the same time, PCMCIA believes that ExpressCard cards, which can be attached not only to laptops, but also to desktop systems, will also be used in communication and information security solutions.
  • Currently, most manufacturers prefer the ExpressCard / 54 format because this slot can accommodate both 54mm and 34mm cards. However, migration to a smaller slot is forecasted in the future – ExpressCard / 34. This is due to both ergonomics and cost reduction, but there are also difficulties along the way – so far, the implementation of, for example, Wi-Fi adapters in the ExpressCard / 34 format is difficult.
  • Although PCMCIA expects ExpressCard to replace PC Cards, in some areas, particularly embedded systems, the standard will last for at least another 10-20 years. In addition, the growing number of HDTV receivers using PC Cards for access control functions should also contribute to the technology’s long lifespan.
