Microsoft Windows Vista is delayed again: be upset or happy
As you know, yesterday Microsoft announced another postponement of the release of its new operating system Windows Vista – this time, to January 2021. But, despite the already quite solid waiting period, hardware manufacturers were not surprised by this – as we reported, the new OS has very, very strict system requirements.
Microsoft is slated to begin shipping enterprise editions of Windows Vista in November, while no home edition will be available this year. Microsoft denies the relationship between strict hardware requirements of the OS and the delay in its release, saying that the company needs to improve security and some other functions of the platform. However, this explanation does not look very convincing – after all, if Microsoft were not confident in security, it is unlikely that Vista would be provided to corporate customers. On the other hand, there are no guarantees that next year the number of computers that meet all the requirements of the new OS will be significantly larger than this one, although, of course, the massive transition to dual-core processors will have to begin just in the second half of this year.
However, the main bottleneck of modern systems is not in the processor, but in the graphics. This is especially true for budget solutions that use the integrated graphics subsystem in the chipset, and the postponement of the release of Windows Vista to next year provides another chance for manufacturers such as SiS and VIA to bring to the market more integrated chipsets with hardware support for DirectX 9.0c and presumably with a Vista Certified sticker or something like that.
On the other hand, NVIDIA, Intel and ATI already have integrated chipsets in their portfolios that meet the requirements of Windows Vista, and the delay in its release to the market is likely to result in sales of high-end and mid-range systems, and so on. something not too high, will decrease even more. And, what should be especially unpleasant for the aforementioned vendors, the traditionally most profitable season of the autumn-New Year sales may not be so profitable this year.
All this is happening against the backdrop of a constant decline in prices for dual-core processors from Intel and AMD, with the former being forced to make moves first in order to keep the market in its hands. Perhaps, all this was done by Intel for a reason, but in the hope of the appearance of Windows Vista by the time of the transition of the current high-end systems to the mid-range segment, which could justify all the losses incurred? Whether the relationship between Intel and Microsoft will change in this regard, we will probably find out soon ..
