Sun reveals all data on UltraSparc T1

Sun announced that it intends to open the technical data of its UltraSparc T1 multi-core processor and make it available to all interested (open-source).

Recall that the specifications of the Hypervisor API were published a little earlier, which will allow companies to port Linux, BSD and applications for them to the UltraSparc T1 platform.

For the first time in the history of the processor industry, any company decided to distribute its developments concerning such a complex chip according to the principle of the GNU GPL. The reason for this was not Sun’s altruism, but the strategy adopted by the company to draw the attention of software and hardware developers to its platform.

The UltraSparc T1 processor (codenamed Niagara) was introduced late last year and found its way into the Sun T1000 and T2000 servers. Sun currently offers processors with 4, 6, or 8 cores, each capable of processing up to four streams of information simultaneously. T1 is built on the basis of the Sparc V9 architecture, equipped with 16 KB of cache for instructions and 8 KB of data cache (per core), as well as a shared cache of the second level of 3 MB.

UltraSparc T1 developer kits and technical data will be published by the manufacturer on www.opensparc.net.
