A camera that focuses after shooting already exists

As we recently reported, a group of scientists from Stanford University has developed a new technology that in the future will help to effectively deal with one of the main defects of photographs – lack of sharpness. Recall that the essence of the invention consists in placing an array of 90 thousand miniature lenses with a size of 125 micrometers each between the camera lens and the matrix.

Stanford University students tried to test this technology in practice, for which they made a prototype device based on a Contax 645 camera and a modified 16-megapixel Megavision FB4040 digital back.

The principle of operation is shown in the sketches below.

At the moment, the maximum image size that has been achieved in practice is only 292×292 pixels. But, as the inventors assure, this is only the beginning. The main thing is that already today they manage to get frames with a greater depth of field at an open aperture, which will allow the photographer to use faster shutter speeds and, thereby, expand the creative and technical possibilities of shooting. The required focus can be easily performed on the computer.
