Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD will take their places

Strategy Analytics shares its vision of how the battle of next generation optical disc formats will be resolved. A recent study by the company suggests Blu-ray Disc is now more likely to become the “standard of choice” for Hollywood, the world’s largest provider of high-definition video recordings. Competing technology, HD-DVD is likely to consolidate its role as a storage medium for PCs, says Strategy Analytics.

Leaving aside the validity of such conclusions, it is interesting to draw attention to an issue that goes beyond the confrontation of optical formats. In fact, the report draws our attention to different approaches to the multimedia component of the digital home. One of them, relying on the PC as the main element of the system, is promoted by members of the “computing” community led by Intel and Microsoft. Another approach, let’s call it “consumer electronics,” is exemplified by Sony and other consumer electronics companies.

By and large, the choice of the digital home paradigm remains open. Will it be a modified computer platform, accompanied by solutions proven by more than one dozen years of development of computing technology, or, perhaps, consumer electronics devices that have “grown wiser” in recent years will win – time will tell. One thing is clear – the one who can “sell” his solution to the market will receive fabulous, multi-billion dollar profits. So the dispute is not about the carrier, but about what ideology the device will be built on, which will take the place of a multimedia server in the digital home. In this sense, the success of the format that will replace DVD will provide its supporters with a key advantage. An important role, according to the authors of the report, can be played by the next-generation Sony PlayStation 3 game console, which, if successful, will be able to reinforce Blu-ray’s claims to the role of the dominant format.
