LG Pulls Off Blu-ray Player

LG Electronics has decided to abandon the release of the Blu-ray player previously scheduled for this spring. This is the BD199, presented at the Consumer Electronics Show two months ago. The source confirms this information with reference to a message sent to LG dealers by VP of consumer electronics sales, Bob Perry. Removing the BD199 from the plans, the company is giving preference to a device that will also be able to “understand” the HD DVD format.

The message says that the release of the player with support for two formats is scheduled for late summer – early fall. The reason for the decision was also named: uncertainty about the outcome of the confrontation between formats. Specifically, Peri wrote: “At this early stage, we are experiencing uncertainty in the high-definition optical disc market.”.

It is noteworthy that the news of the abandonment of the Blu-ray player in favor of a universal device appeared just a few weeks after the signing of a licensing agreement between LG and Toshiba, which provided the South Korean company with access to HD DVD technologies.
