Konica Minolta suffers from the transition to digital cameras
Japanese camera maker Konica Minolta is experiencing the effects of a massive market shift from traditional technology to digital. Losing consumers, like other manufacturers of film technology, the company has not yet been able to adapt to the new state of affairs. In turn, intense competition among manufacturers of digital cameras literally pushed it into the “red zone”: according to forecasts, the year for Konica Minolta will be unprofitable. Sales for the year decreased by 3.3%. Earlier forecasted 23 billion yen profit yielded to forecasted loss of 47 billion yen. This is exactly the result expected for the fiscal year ending in March.
In response to the decline in demand for photographic film, Konica Minolta plans to reduce the total number of employees – 33,000 people – by 10%. At the same time, production and sales network will be “rationalized”.
The company’s president, Fumio Iwai, said that the restructuring of Konica Minolta was long planned, but the pace will have to accelerate given the rapid “deterioration in the business climate.”. Nevertheless, the Japanese are not going to give up any product line yet.
