Scientists tame viruses to create ultra-thin batteries

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) were able to put into practice the ability of individual viruses to build nanonets. In the near future, we will probably be able to get ultra-compact lithium-ion batteries, the structure of which will include cells created by useful viruses.

By manipulating two genes of viruses, scientists managed to create a functional device from chaotically dividing viruses.

According to the leaders of the research group, a new variety of batteries awaits us in the future, ranging in size from a grain of rice to the size of today’s batteries.

The battery consists of an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte in between. In this case, to create a specific anode, viruses work by collecting cobalt oxide and gold in a circuit. Since viruses carry a negative charge, they take their place in the lattices of positively charged polymers and form thin flexible layers of film that act as an anode.

Each virus is only 6 nm in diameter, and the filamentous structures formed by them and polymers are up to 880 nm in length.

The choice of material for creating the battery of the future is due to the fact that cobalt oxide is able to store two to three times more energy than traditional materials of today, and gold gives electrodes an increased electrical capacity.

For the reaction in which such structures are created, neither high pressure nor temperatures other than room temperature are required, which should reduce the production cost.
