ULi M1697: official announcement
Yesterday, the official announcement of the ULi M1697 south bridge took place, the mass production of which the company threatened to start back in July. However, trial copies of the new chip became available only in September, and deliveries are only now.
ULi M1697 is designed for AMD K8 processors and, since the memory controller is integrated into the processor, it takes over the functions of interacting with the PCI Express bus and peripheral devices connected to USB ports, IEEE1394, etc. d., which is why, in fact, the company is referred to as a single-chip solution for creating motherboards for AMD processors.
M1697 is manufactured in compliance with the 0.18-micron technological process at UMC factories. The chip contains 6.4 million. transistors and in the future it is planned to transfer its production to 0.13-micron technology, which will reduce power consumption (now – 12 W). The M1697 contains a PCI Express physical layer controller developed by Rambus, which supports 20 bus lines, which allows you to organize the operation of one slot in x16 mode or two in x8 mode (peak bandwidth – 4 GB / s). Which option to enable two graphics adapters (for which, in fact, the 2×8 mode is needed) – NVIDIA SLI or ATI CrossFire will be implemented in motherboards, presumably, depends solely on the drivers. By the way, simultaneously with the release of the M1697, ULi demonstrated the reference design of the motherboard based on the M1697 + M1695 bundle, which supports two PCI Express x16 slots and the SLI mode. The remaining lines can be used to create three x1 connectors or one x4.
In terms of processor support, ULi says the South Bridge can work with a wide range of AMD K8 processors, including Socket 754, Socket 939, Socket 940 processor interfaces, and even Socket M2 and Socket S1 (Socket F).
