Intel Breathes Itanium Solutions Alliance To Life
Seeking to breathe new life into Itanium server processors, Intel will join eight server vendors to form the Itanium Solutions Alliance, to be officially announced this week.
Alliance members will include Hewlett-Packard, Bull, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Siemens, Hitachi, NEC, SGI and Unisys. The Itanium Solutions Alliance’s primary goal right now is to make it easier for system integrators to port applications to Itanium. In turn, the emergence of more applications for Itanium cannot but stimulate sales.
Jeffrey Hewitt, director of science at Gartner, says the alliance is a good step towards that goal. If Itanium managed to penetrate the server market based on RISC processors, this does not mean that these platforms will succeed in becoming mainstream. This year, the analyst company expects to sell about 42 thousand Itanium-based servers with a total value of 2.6 billion. dollars. Earlier, Gartner predicted the sale of about 74 thousand systems worth 2.7 billion. – significantly more entry-level Unix servers were expected to be shipped than there actually were.
It is easy to see that three of the four leading server vendors were not included in the alliance – IBM and Sun continue to develop their own RISC products, and Dell abandoned Itanium due to slow market dynamics.
What HP is talking about so much now – the lack of applications for Itanium, was evident for a very long time. As if making excuses for the fact that the alliance was created only now, HP notes that now the Itanium platform is just beginning to “gain momentum”: about 75 vendors are supplying servers, and the number of applications has reached 5 thousand – twice as much as last year.
It is also curious that Microsoft has declared its desire to work closely with the alliance – despite the fact that until now the main generator of growth for Itanium has been Unix and (to a lesser extent) Linux operating systems competing with Microsoft developments.
