Infineon plans transition to 65 nm process technology and business restructuring

German company Infineon yesterday joined a strategic alliance between Chartered, IBM and Samsung to develop and implement a 65nm semiconductor chip manufacturing process. Infineon engineers will take part in research at Chartered’s 300mm Fab 7 silicon wafers, and 200 employees of the German company are already working at IBM’s East Fishkill factory to develop new technologies and processes, including 45 nm. The first samples of finished products manufactured using the 65 nm process technology are expected to be received in the 1st quarter of 2021, and already in the 4th quarter it is planned to launch industrial production, primarily of circuits intended for cell phones, according to the new standards.

Meanwhile, Infineon CEO Wolfgang Ziebart has unveiled the company’s plans to phase out its DRAM business. The decision is motivated by high competition and low profitability of this market segment. At the first stage, the DRAM production unit, whose assets are estimated by analysts at 3-4 billion. Doll., will be divided into 2 independent groups, one of which will continue to produce memory circuits, and the other will deal with logic for use in automotive electronics and various identification chips.
