Scorpio for mobile devices
QUALCOMM has announced the release of the Scorpion microprocessor designed for use in mobile devices with wireless interfaces.
The official press release notes that the Scorpion is the first microprocessor to be specially designed and optimized for integration into MSM (mobile station modem) solutions developed by the company’s specialists.
Scorpion is expected to deliver up to eight times the performance of the processor used in MSM today, operating at up to 1 GHz. “Scorpio” will receive a multimedia coprocessor built on ARM NEON technology as assistants, which will add another 8 billion operations per second to the total piggy bank for working with video and audio data.
Previous QUALCOMM processors were built on an off-the-shelf core licensed from ARM. The terms of the agreement between the two companies also cover architecture licensing, making Scorpion compatible with ARM 7 at the instruction set level. This should make it easier for developers to master the novelty. The processor will be manufactured at 65 nm. The appearance of the first solutions based on it is expected next year.
