Mercury Computer Systems PowerBlock 200: Die Hard

Mercury Computer Systems, known for its designs for the military, announced the release of the PowerBlock 200, the third product in a family of hardware products based on the Cell Broadband Engine (BE) processor. Recall that the agreement between IBM and Mercury on licensing the microprocessor was signed about six months ago, and in October the Mercury blade server based on Cell was released. The novelty is the first device on the Cell BE, enclosed in a reinforced housing for operation in harsh conditions.

The need to use a reinforced housing is dictated by the main field of application of the PowerBlock 200 – the product is military equipment. According to the developers, in a combat environment of the 21st century, it is important to provide servicemen with the ability to access a large number of sensors in real time. Working with a large amount of data and preparing a picture of the battlefield based on it requires significant computing power. Placing appropriate resources in tanks, armored personnel carriers and highly mobile multipurpose wheeled vehicles (Hummers) requires, in the words of the official press release, “an unprecedented level of processor density in a highly protected enclosure that can withstand the harsh conditions of the battlefield.”.

How does the PowerBlock 200 meet these requirements?? The declared performance of the computer is 200 GFLOPS, which, according to the developers, is equivalent to 12-20 PowerPC processors or 45 Intel Pentium 4 processors. In addition to receiving and processing data from sensors, the computer is focused on solving communication problems, target recognition, tracking, positioning and georeferencing, visualizing the earth’s surface, processing video and static images, identifying features.

Unified ATR Long Tall chassis designed for military computers. PowerBlock 200 uses half the size of such a chassis. Its front panel has Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, RS-232 and GPIO connectors. With the help of an expansion card, the computer can be supplemented with other I / O. PowerBlock 200 consumes less than 400W. Cooling is based on heat dissipation by the chassis walls.

PowerBlock 200 is slated to start shipping in the first half of 2021.
