Miniature FDK antennas for UWB signal
A few days ago, the Japanese company FDK demonstrated what it called “the world’s smallest single-ended antennas”. Prototype antennas are designed to transmit ultra-wideband (UWB) signals at frequencies that depend on their geometric dimensions. The antenna measures 10 x 5 x 1 mm and is designed for the 3.1-10.6 GHz range, and the ultra-miniature product measures only 6 x 3 x 1 mm (!) – for the range 3.1-5 or 3.1-6 GHz.
FDK antennas are made of ceramic and are designed for surface mounting. Commenting on the standard value of the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), equal to 2.5, a company representative noted that the actual value does not exceed 2 (recall, the lower the better). The value was measured in the lower part of the operating range of 3.1 GHz-10.6 GHz. He also added that antennas do not need matching devices as their impedance is 50 ohms.
The development of miniature antennas is of great importance for modern consumer electronics, communications and “personal computing”, as new antennas will further reduce the size of devices and simplify the integration of increasingly popular wireless interfaces into end products.
