Panda Software: Virus & Intrusion Weekly Report (Week 40)
Panda Software has released another report on viruses and intrusions that were the most popular last week. This time, the report will cover three threats: Banker Trojans.AXW and Format.A as well as the Sober email worm.Y.
Format.A is a Trojan posing as a utility designed to run unsigned code on a PSP (PlayStation Portable) console. However, at startup, it deletes files that are key for the operation of the console, as a result of which it will not be able to start. To distribute Format.A describes itself as an application to exploit the BIOS version of PSP consoles to an older version in order to run pirated games.
Banker.AXW is a Trojan that monitors title windows containing certain text strings, mainly related to banks. Then he writes down the keys pressed in these windows to get passwords and other important information. This Trojan uses several PHP scripts to send the collected information. Like most Trojans, Banker.AXW is not capable of self-propagation. He needs the participation of an intruder to penetrate the computer. Distribution methods include, but are not limited to, floppy disks, CDs, emails with attachments, files downloaded from the Internet, etc.d.
And finally Sober.Y is a new member of this family of worms, which, like its predecessors, is capable of spreading rapidly via email. Just hours after his appearance, PandaLabs began logging incidents involving him around the world. To prevent this worm from spreading, especially through computers that are not properly protected, Panda Software provides users with a free utility called PQRemove that detects and removes this worm from any infected computer.
This worm uses two types of emails to spread: the first is a letter in English with the subject “Your new password”, which tries to trick users into believing that this is a password change notification that offers information in an attached file for review. – pword_change.zip. The second is a letter in German, allegedly containing photographs of old school friends in a KlassenFoto file.zip. Both compressed files contain the PW_Klass executable.Pic.packed-bitmap.exe, which is a copy of the worm.
If this file is run, a false CRC error message is displayed, while malicious activity continues. The worm looks for e-mail addresses on the infected computer in files with certain extensions, and sends itself to them using its own SMTP mechanism. If the address ends in .de (Germany), .ch (Switzerland), .at (Austria) or .li (Liechtenstein), the worm sends the German version of the letter.
