DiBcom: digital television technology for Centrino
As we reported yesterday, during the IDF, Intel demonstrated its Oplus MN301 solution, on the basis of which several options for digital television receivers are offered at once. According to a source today, a special version will be developed for mobile computers, and it will be built on the basis of a solution currently being developed by a small French company DiBcom, created in 2000. In any case, it is known that Intel and DiBcom are going to join forces to integrate digital TV signal reception functionality into the Centrino and Xscale platforms.
DiBcom’s arsenal of technologies has solutions that allow to accurately receive a 24 Mbps video stream, while moving at a speed of 150 mph (240 km / h). As part of the agreement announced today, Intel Capital is investing an as-yet-unnamed amount in DiBcom, hoping, of course, that the company will become one of the technology leaders in this area. By the way, DiBcom predicts that the vast majority of laptops will be equipped with digital TV receivers by 2021.
In the future, DiBcom plans to go further and start introducing mobile digital TV into cell phones. True, here the company will have to compete with representatives of such companies already skilled in DVB-H as Texas Instruments, Freescale, Philips Semiconductors, Samsung and STMicroelectronics, but the experience of CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio), which received funding from Intel as a market leader shows that anything is possible in emerging markets.
