Oki Electric Industry is the first in the world to transmit data over a distance of 635 km at a speed of 160 Gbps
Japanese researchers continue to break data transmission records. Oki Electric Industry was able to transfer data over a distance of 635 km at a speed of 160 Gbps, which is equivalent to the transmission of four films in one second (approximately 8 hours of video recording). The experiment was carried out as part of the “Research and Development on Ultrahigh-speed Backbone Photonic Network Technologies” project of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). The result was demonstrated on a test bench provided by Japan Gigabit Network II (JGN II).
The JGN II test bed is an optical link between the Kyoto lab and the Osaka relay station. Each connection point includes an optical amplifier, similar to those used in commercial 10 Gigabit networks, as well as a dispersion compensation device.
Previously, Oki used a transceiver designed by its experts to transmit data over distances of 120 and 640 km in laboratory conditions. The current test confirmed the practical suitability of the technology, since the channel was under the influence of the external environment, in particular, temperature drops, and no errors were recorded.
