Next Generation Blu-ray Disc Burning: 1x, 2x Write Speed,…,7x!

While rewritable and rewritable Blu-ray discs
still far from “mainstream” like CD-RW
and DVD-RW drives in today’s PCs,
manufacturers are already starting to develop their Blu-ray
drives supporting 2x speed.

According to the announcements
of various manufacturers included in the Blu-ray camp,
BD discs of the following will be produced simultaneously
types:

  • BD-ROM – recorded
  • BD-R – Recordable
  • BD-RE – rewritable.

Thus, it is planned to satisfy all requests
future media market. Blu-ray specification also
includes single and double layer versions —ROM and —R
disks. As for the four-layer carrier, it is still
which is not seriously considered as a real product, at least in
in the nearest future.

12cm discs will have typical capacity
~ 25 GB per layer (SL disks) and
respectively, 50 GB for dual layer discs (DL discs).
Included in the format specification
Blu-ray Bit Rate – 36 Mbps. This will be
speed 1x (CLV).

However
less Philips / BenQ, Pioneer and HP
have already stated that their first drives to be released will have
speed 2x. As expected to record one SL disc
at a write speed of 2x, it will take ~ 46.5 min., and for
DL-disk – respectively 93 minutes.

Of course, such a high-speed race is not an easy task for
manufacturers, the maximum achievable speed of the entire system
limited by many parameters. So, for a 12 cm optical disc
characteristic maximum permissible rotation speed with a frequency of 10800
about./ min. BD discs will spin from Blu-ray drives
with a speed of 1955 and 821 rpm./ min. (external / internal
diameter), – this is the rotational speed of the disk and will provide the transmission mode
data 1x. A simple calculation can determine the maximum theoretically achievable speed for BD discs in the future – 12x
(CAV).

The figure below shows the correspondence of the speeds
three generations of optical drives and media: CD, DVD
and BD.

According to the latest information from R&D
Philips laboratories, they have already reached
recording speed 7x (4-7x CAV) on media
BD-R.
