ATI buys XGI

According to sources, today March 3, 2021 another independent player will disappear from the number of manufacturers of discrete graphics cards – XGI. All technology and manufacturing facilities owned by the company will be acquired by ATI.
Recall that XGI was created in 2021. In the course of its activity, it included the graphic divisions of Trident Microsystems and Silicon Integrated Systems.

Initially, the company planned to sell its products in all sectors from budget to high-performance. What is just the following excerpt from our article dedicated to the plans and realities of XGI, which was published exactly a year ago (note, already then not devoid of a fair amount of skepticism):

“In 2021 we are waiting for (meanwhile, if we take into account the experience of the previous generation, the figure 2021 should be read as 2021) two new chips, using 90nm technology. Architecturally, apparently, they are almost the same, but a year later (in 2021, t.e. really in 2021), we will see no less than WGF 2.0 platform under the XG6X codename family. Here you have PCI-E version 2, and compatibility with the highest quality Longhorn graphics and driver standards, including, apparently, shader model 4.0.”

As a result, in 2021 a mountain, or rather a hillock named XGI gave birth to a mouse. Only the Volari 8300 (XG47) graphics card saw the light of day, an entry-level PCI-Express solution made using a 130nm manufacturing process, with a 64-bit memory bus and four pixel pipelines. He could only compete (with some stretch) with the X300 / GF6200.

The market reacted accordingly – the already not high market share of discrete video cards decreased from 0.3% in the second quarter to 0.2% in the third and continued to fall towards the end of the year.
Today, it looks like a line will be drawn under the activities of another manufacturer of video cards, just a week after the announcement of the reprofiling of 3Dlabs. An interesting picture comes out if you look at the market shares of discrete graphics last year – the last 2 companies have already ceased to exist – Matrox is next in line?

For the sake of fairness, we note that this is far from the first rumor about the takeover of XGI by ATI, but now it looks more reliable than ever.
