Early information on ATI R600 and NVIDIA G80 graphics chips

Until the release of fundamentally new flagship video cards of the leading market players, NVIDIA and ATI, about six months more, and the first information about them begins to seep on the pages of publications.

In particular, preliminary insider data on ATI R600 looks like this:

  • Unified shader architecture;
  • 64 processors that perform pixel and vertex operations in any combination, depending on the load on the video card imposed by a particular application;
  • Technological process has not yet been determined. Both 80nm and 65nm standards are likely to be used;
  • GDDR4 support will probably be implemented in the chip, but it’s impossible to say with confidence that the first cards based on R600 will come with this type of memory;
  • The core clock speeds are unlikely to be significantly raised in comparison with the X1900 series – with this architecture, this is not required in order to provide a confident superiority over the previous generation;
  • DX10 support will be present. New graphics cards will definitely be ready for Vista;
  • During the development of the R600, a lot of attention will be paid to the physics processing by the GPU;
  • The R600 will go on sale around this year’s Catholic Christmas.

As for the NVIDIA G80, there are fewer details so far and they are not so rosy. It is said that the chip will inherit the G70 / G71 architecture and acquire support for DirectX 10.0. So it looks like we won’t be seeing NVIDIA unified GPUs this year. In addition, it is mentioned that at the moment the development of a new graphics core is going with some lag behind the plan, however, despite this, cards based on it will be released earlier than the competitor’s products. In addition, NVIDIA’s flagship will be cheaper than ATI.
How true this information is – it is not yet known, you can be sure of only one thing – at the end of this year we will face a new round of confrontation between the leaders of the video card market, and at a different quality level – with support for DirectX 10.
