Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 is the new performance leader in anticipation of Conroe

A few months ago, Intel released its first Extreme Edition processor using a 65nm process, the Pentium Extreme Edition 955 (955XE). The dual-core 955XE is clocked at 3.46 GHz and has been Intel’s fastest desktop processor for a relatively long time. In addition, thanks to the 65nm process technology, its power consumption is much lower than that of the previous generation, despite a 10% increase in clock speed and twice the cache (4 MB versus 2 MB).

Currently, Intel is leaving the Netburst architecture, but in anticipation of products based on Conroe and Merom cores, the company considered it necessary to release Pentium Extreme Edition 965 based on the new Presler core stepping, which is less “voracious” and, accordingly, has a lower level of heat dissipation.

In fact, Presler is two Cedar Mill cores, and the assembly technology allows each of them to be taken even from different silicon wafers, which reduces the rejection rate.

Pentium Extreme Edition 965 (965XE) clocked at 3.73 GHz. Like its predecessor, the processor is equipped with 4MB L2 cache – 2MB for each core. On a chip with an area of approximately 140 mm? placed 376 million. transistors. Power consumption of the 965XE ranges from 95W to 130W. While the 955XE had a “2” core stepping, the 965XE had a “4”. Unfortunately, there is no information about the changes made yet.

Each core supports Hyper-Threading technology. Accordingly, for the operating system 965XE looks like four virtual processors. FSB frequency is 1066 MHz (266 MHz, Quad-Pumped), operating voltage is from 1.2 V to 1.33 V. The 965XE is fully compatible with Intel’s virtualization technology, which allows the user to run multiple operating systems, each in its own independent environment. In addition, there is support for EMT64T and Execute Disable Bit (function to prevent some types of attacks using buffer overflow).

HotHardware enthusiasts have conducted large-scale testing, the main conclusion of which is that in comparison with the 955XE, the new processor is much “cooler” and, therefore, has a larger clock frequency headroom. For example, using the stock cooler, they managed to achieve stable system operation with the 965XE operating at 4.36 GHz. In this case, the maximum temperature was 63 °, and the temperature in the “idle” mode – 35 °. For comparison, in 955XE these figures are 70 ° and 50 °, respectively.

Processors priced at $ 1000 – an amateur product. Unfortunately for Intel, after the release of the Conroe benchmarks, the 965XE is unlikely to sell like hotcakes. However, it is currently the fastest Intel processor, and the Conroe is still on the way. Pentium Extreme Edition 965 is expected to hit the market on April 1st this year.
