Philips turns fabric into a display

Philips showcases photonic textiles at IFA 2021 – fabrics that can function as displays. Philips Research believes that the development of this unusual technology opens the way to a new stage in the long history of textiles.

At first glance, clothes, towels, linens and curtains seem to be inappropriate places to place displays and interactive systems. But these technically simple items take up more place in everyday life. By incorporating a variety of flexible, multi-colored LEDs into the fabric, while maintaining its core properties, Philips has been able to bring more life to these static objects.

To create a light-emitting material, the researchers developed a unifying base made entirely of fabric. In addition, they managed to create flexible and foldable substrates based on plastics and films.

The base was then coated with compact LED modules in three primary colors (RGB LED). A kind of luminous network, which is characterized by a relatively large distance between pixels, was built into everyday objects: pillows, bags, rugs. As the fabric covering the miniature light sources naturally scatters light, each pixel looks larger than it actually is. At the same time, the LEDs remain small and invisible, with little or no effect on the properties of the fabric. We managed to make objects from “light textiles” interactive by integrating sensors (orientation and pressure) and communication devices (Bluetooth, GSM).

Results, according to Philips, are encouraging. New, unusual fabrics can be useful in a variety of situations: for creating diffused lighting in a living room, for transmitting visual signals, for solving healthcare problems.

In promoting its development, Philips looks forward to working with companies that will be able to assess the potential of the new product in the clothing and interior design industry.
