According to a source with reference to leading manufacturers of graphics adapters, ATI and NVIDIA will focus on the development of graphics processors adapted for production according to 90nm technological standards, and not planned to be implemented at the factories of their partners of 80nm technological processes. The reason for this, as always in such cases, is the low percentage of usable chips and the presence of unresolved technical problems.
According to the source, ATI was planning to start production of several GPUs (RV570, RV560, RV535 and RV505) at 80nm standards in the third quarter of this year. Now, the appearance of the first 80nm graphics chips is not expected earlier than next year, and in this we will be able to contemplate 90nm versions of the listed solutions. It is expected, though, that in the second half of this year, motherboard makers will be able to start receiving trial samples of 80nm GPUs. Even less is known about NVIDIA’s plans for 80nm technologies, and so far no one has undertaken to assert whether the company will switch to them at all or wait until 65nm production begins.

It is interesting to note that each 90nm production batch received by video card manufacturers contains hundreds of Radeon X1900, Radeon X1600 and NVIDIA GeForce 7900, while the number of GeForce 7600 in the same production batches is in the thousands. Last year, when ATI just started production of the Radeon X1800 at 90nm standards, their number supplied hundreds of units per production batch (of substrates).
