Internet connection is optional to protect next generation optical discs

Readers closely following the evolution of next-generation optical disc standards may have the impression that devices that will implement the AACS copy protection mechanism – this applies to both Blu-ray players and HD DVD players – will definitely require a WAN connection. How else can the exchange of information be implemented between the device and the center issuing permission for copying, checking if the player is not “jailbroken”, and updating the keys and firmware as needed??

Meanwhile, the connection requirement, presented in some publications as an immutable truth, is in fact incorrect. As it turns out, devices equipped with AACS, which may occasionally need key and firmware updates, will be able to use “existing network equipment, including Ethernet routers and WiFi transceivers” to validate copyright and under no circumstances will require a connection to play discs. For this reason, the first HD DVD and Blu-ray players will not allow disc copying at all.

Well – it looks like the situation is the opposite of what the forces have tried to put together in the minds of consumers, promoting high-definition video recording on optical discs of the next generation. If, in fact, obtaining permission to copy is the only moment that requires a connection to the Network, and key replacement is no longer a problem under AACS, then the question posed by the source arises: what is the vaunted reliability of the new protection against pirated copying? Apparently, AACS will suffer the fate of CSS – as you know, the DVD content protection system did not last long.
