At the IDF forum, Intel presented a novelty reflecting the trend towards further integration of individual system components. This is an on-package CMOS voltage regulator chip.

The idea is that a typical regulator installed on the motherboard reacts relatively slowly to changes in consumption. Moving the ESC closer to the processor is expected to allow it to switch at speeds comparable to that of the processor. As a result, the efficiency of its operation is significantly increased, and this, in turn, reduces the allocated power and eliminates the need for radiators and fans.

An additional benefit is freeing up space on the motherboard previously occupied by the regulator and the cooling system.

The details of the technology have not yet been disclosed, but the presence of a working sample, from which a company representative with spectacular gestures removed elements of the cooling system that had become unnecessary, suggests that soon we will see something similar in serial Intel products.
