ATI on its attitude to overclocking officially

Some time ago, ATI officially notified its partners that they are free to overclock the core of ATI X1000 series products. Last year, sources already published such information regarding the X1800, but it was not official.

The memo sent to ATI’s partners clearly states that the name of video cards sold by companies under their own trademarks should not depend on frequencies, but only on the type of ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit, in this case, a microcircuit that determines the type of video card). Therefore, do not expect the appearance on the market of modifications, for example, X1650XT or X1920XTX. Moreover, such creativity will be punished by ATI. Nevertheless, there should be more factory overclocked cards, the first examples of this approach are our recently announced HIS X1800GTO IceQ 3 Turbo and X1600Pro IceQ Turbo.

However, thermal damage to the chip caused by custom overclocking will not be covered by the warranty. However, users have the right to change chip frequencies using Catalyst Control Center or partner programs at their own risk.

Factory overclocking must, without fail, be compensated by the manufacturer with an improved cooling system.

Another interesting point of the document is the direct prohibition of manufacturers to reduce the frequencies wired into the ASIC, which can potentially serve as a deterrent for manufacturers of video cards with passive cooling.
