IDF Taiwan: Intel Introduces Robson Technology

Intel
recently provided information on its future dual-core
a mobile processor codenamed Merom. Today
however, the company has slightly opened the curtain about its future mobile platform,
which also has its own code name – Robson.
Some details were presented at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF),
taking place in Taiwan.

The Merom processor is expected to become
heir to Yonah, a 65nm mobile processor that
is the main part of the Napa mobile platform, term
the release of which is scheduled for January 2021.

Robson technology is planned to increase the time
battery life, speed up the boot time of the operating system, speed up the time
system response to user actions. In addition to a quick start of the OS itself,
serious acceleration of the launch of most applications is also planned.

This speed of Robson’s work is explained by
non-volatile NAND flash cache. Instead of addressing
to the hard drive, the Robson laptop will read
data from NAND flash memory. During the
demonstration on the forum, a laptop with 128 MB flash memory of the standard was used
NAND. At the same time, the start speed of Adobe Reader 4
was 0.4 seconds, while on most others
laptops (without Robson technology) the startup time of this
application was 5.4 seconds.

Intel plans to make
Merom pin-to-pin compatible with Yonah,
as noted by Mooly Iden, head of Intel
mobile group. And this, in turn, will make the platform
Napa upgradeable, it will be enough to change the processor and
update BIOS.

At IDF Taiwan was
Yonah processor announced, brief specification
which is:

  • Number of transistors: 151 million.
  • Number of cores: 2
  • Cache size: 2 MB
  • Front Side Bus (FSB): 667 MHz
  • Processor socket (socket) type: PGA478 or BGA479

In addition, according to preliminary information, the company is thinking about creating 4-core mobile processors Yonah and Merom.
