Last week, Taipei hosted the Rambus Developer Forum (RDF). The purpose of this event, presumably, was to develop interest in such Rambus technologies as XDR and XDR2 (the next generation XDR, announced this year, allows, according to the source, to work at frequencies up to 8 GHz, supports thread control – micro-threading and adaptive timings). According to Rambus itself, the company is now negotiating with Taiwanese manufacturers of RAM on licensing XDR and XDR2 technologies, however, with whom it does not say, and the Taiwanese vendors themselves, apparently, are in no hurry to use the new technology.

Currently, XDR DRAM memory chips are produced by three manufacturers: Samsung, Elpida and Toshiba. Master clock generators for XDR modules are manufactured by Texas Instruments, IDT and Cypress. None of the DRAM vendors have announced XDR2 support yet.

Rambus expects systems using XDR2 to achieve 256 GB / s memory bus bandwidth by 2021-2021. The company believes that XDR technology, meanwhile, can be successfully used in desktop personal computers, while XDR2 is positioned in such segments as graphic workstations and broadcast systems for digital television.

A few words about how XDR2 differs from XDR. As mentioned above, XDR2 includes innovations such as micro-threading architecture, adaptive timing and transmit equalization. “Micro-threading” is expressed in the fact that the address space is divided into areas (sections) with independent addressing, respectively, access to these areas occurs simultaneously. FlexPhase adaptive timings take into account the fact that the length of communication lines in the memory bus can be unequal, however, it is precisely due to the adaptive adjustment of delay times that strictly equal communication line lengths are not required. Finally, the latest innovation (transmit equalization) suppresses the effect of adding the transmitted signal with the reflected signal from the line. For this, a closed-loop circuit is used at the output of the chip, which also works to reduce the effect of signal attenuation.

Thus, it must be admitted that, from a technical point of view, XDR2 certainly has a future. However, DRAM vendors treat the new technology, to put it mildly, with coolness, at least among Taiwanese manufacturers, four of which are among the ten largest RAM vendors. Moreover, almost all Taiwanese manufacturers are not optimistic about XDR either (this type of memory is used in Sony Playstation 3).

It is possible that the cold attitude towards Rambus developments was due to its behavior during the DDR standardization and attempts to further obtain royalties from manufacturers. By the way, during the RDF, Rambus announced that it intends to prove the biased attitude of a number of RAM manufacturers (in particular, Hynix and Micron are mentioned) to its decisions, which agitated the world’s leading PC brands from 1999 to 2021 not to use RDRAM in their systems.
