TPS63000: current converter extends battery life by up to a third

How to extend battery life in devices such as pocket PCs or mobile phones? There are two standard ways – to increase the capacity of the battery (and it is desirable – without increasing its mass and size, which is difficult and is still progressing without much success, despite all kinds of catalytic developments) and reduce energy consumption. However, there is another way – to increase the efficiency of battery consumption, which, according to Texas Instruments, can increase battery life by up to 28%.

The thing is that a lithium-ion battery, consisting of one cell (unlike laptops, where several cells are used), at maximum charge, provides a potential difference of 4.2 V, which quickly drops to a stable value of ~ 3.7 V. Then, in the course of further discharge, the potential difference is kept at about 3.7 V, after which it again drops sharply to 2.7 V. Therefore, most PDAs, as a rule, notify the owner about reaching a dangerous level of ~ 3.5 V, after which the lithium-ion battery should be recharged as soon as possible; and goes into standby mode or turns off.

The TI TPS63000 DC / DC Converter is capable of providing a stable output voltage of 3.3V while the input voltage can be from 1.2V to 5.5V. Of course, the TPS63000 can be used in a wider range of solutions, but this converter, like a similar development by Philips, apart from a PDA, will come in handy for UMPCs, which are pretty much suffering from a shortage of battery life. The company claims that with a load current of 320 mA, the battery efficiency reaches 96%, and the increase in battery life is 28% – these are the percentages that can be extracted during operation when the input voltage is 3.5-2.7 V. The dimensions of the converter are negligible: only 3×3 mm, and the price is 2.75 dollars in bulk quantities.

In order to provide a stable output voltage, the TPS63000 uses a two-stage conversion circuit: first, the input voltage is increased to 5 V, then stabilized to the desired 3.3 V level.
