Carbon nanotubes will change flash memory?
It is known that carbon nanotubes have already been used in experimental electronic devices: transistors, inverters and switches. According to the source, scientists were able to take the next step towards introducing nanotubes into microelectronics – the first flash memory was created using them. Of course, there is still a long way to go before commercial products appear, but the prospects look promising.
Needless to say, flash memory is ubiquitous, including memory cards, MP3 players, USB drives, cell phones. And all this is due to the possibility of rewriting, high data storage density, the ability to store information in the absence of supply voltage and a low price.
A typical flash memory stores information in a kind of grid of so-called cells, each of which consists of three layers: a control and a floating gate, separated by a thin layer of insulator. When a voltage is applied to the cell, negative charge (electrons) build up on the floating gate. At a certain charge level, the floating gate is considered closed, and the cell is considered to be “0”. If the charge is below this level, the gate is open and the cell is considered to have taken the value “1”. In other words, each cell stores one bit of information.
The researchers managed to create a memory cell in which carbon nanotubes are used as a layer in which the charge accumulates. By embedding nanotubes in a compound of hafnium, aluminum and oxygen (HfAlO), they obtained a cell in which the functions of a control gate and an insulator were combined. The thickness of the layers located on the silicon substrate does not exceed a few nanometers.
