NVIDIA will refuse to use G70 Ultra?
According to available (unconfirmed) information, NVIDIA may refuse to release video cards based on graphics
G70 Ultra processor. Cards on this chip will be removed from the company’s roadmap, instead of the Ultra version they will
collect only 7800GTX.
According to the source, NVIDIA believes that ATI will not be able to supply a large number of cards on the R520 XT chip
with operating frequencies
600 MHz / 1400 MHz (core / memory), at least that won’t happen until December. And the G70 Ultra processor was planned as a top solution for gaming
video cards, t.e.the fastest among the G70 – with the highest frequencies. The main reason for the delay in release by ATI
its R520 GT chip – the difficulties of the Canadian company in mastering the 90 nm process technology, according to which the chip should be produced.
Thus, by temporarily (and maybe even permanently) abandoning the G70 Ultra, NVIDIA can retain its leadership by selling
available in bulk 7800GTX.
As you know, both versions: GTX and Ultra from the NVIDIA 7800 series use the same chip, only with different clock rates.
Tests have shown that when used with a fast processor (Athlon
4000+) there is no significant difference in performance between them. At frequencies of 500/1400 MHz (chip / memory, respectively), you need to set in the used
full screen anti-aliasing (FSAA) and anisotropic filtering
(AF) at a resolution of at least 1600×1200 pixels to see
differences in speed.
ATI has not given any comments on this yet, the 520 GT chip is expected by Christmas.
