Intel will prepare for Merom with lower prices for Core Duo

Intel will significantly cut prices for its mobile Core Duo processors in May, Channel Register colleagues report.

So, today’s most productive model, Core Duo T2600, clocked at 2.16 GHz and equipped with 2 MB L2 cache, will fall in price by 33.1% – from 632 to 423 dollars. T2500, operating at 2 GHz, will lose 30.5% in price and will cost $ 294. Finally, the T2400 (1.83 GHz) will be priced at $ 241, 18% less than current levels. In this regard, the fate of the Core Duo T2300, operating at 1.66 GHz, which is already selling for $ 241, and is listed in Intel’s plans for sales of the second quarter of 2021, is not entirely clear.

An interesting parallel can be drawn with the mobile processors based on the Merom core, which will go on sale in the fourth quarter:

  • T5600: 1.83GHz, FSB 667, 2MB L2 cache, $ 241
  • T7200: 2.00GHz, FSB 667, 4MB L2 cache, $ 294
  • T7400: 2.16GHz, FSB 667, 4MB L2 cache, $ 423
  • T7600: 2.33GHz, FSB 667, 4MB L2 cache, $ 637.

As you can see, at the same prices, customers will receive a new core operating at the same frequencies that will be assigned for the Core Duo. Merom’s benefits include improved power consumption, processor architecture improvements that Intel says bring significant performance gains, and an increased L2 cache from 2 MB to 4 MB for some models.
