Samsung enters the contract manufacturing market. This time – in earnest
Known for its high volume of capital investments in the industry, Samsung, unlike, for example, IBM, has never yet focused so much attention on contract manufacturing, although for several years it has been producing individual batches for its partners. Now the Korean electronics giant has set its sights on full-scale implementation of contract manufacturing on its own, in places idle due to fluctuations in demand for operational and flash memory, capacities. Still unfulfilled, Samsung’s intention has already caused some concern among the chip forges in Taiwan, China and Singapore – so far they have consistently reported 90% and higher utilization of their capacities, but lose customers forced to wait months for the fulfillment of their contracts , they still don’t want to.
And all why? This is because Samsung plans to double the capacity of its 300mm Giheung plant by the end of the year, from 15,000 to 30,000 wafers per month. Presumably, this will be production in compliance with the standards of 130-nm or 90-nm technological process, although at the end of the year the company may start production according to 65-nm standards, if all qualification works are completed by that moment.
Samsung’s shift towards contract manufacturing services is also interesting from the point of view that it calls into question the business model, in which firms are divided into non-fables and pure-play, but not leading their own developments of intellectual property (with the exception of technologies directly related to production). The main difference between Samsung and, for example, Chartered, SMIC, TSMC, UMC and others, is that most of the chips Samsung produces for itself and sells under its own brands.
However, Samsung’s movement to increase its presence in the contract manufacturing market did not even begin last year, when the expansion of the Giyun plant began, but even earlier, with the signing of a technology agreement with IBM and Chartered. As part of the agreement, for example, it is planned to develop a single technological process for a client with production at the factories of any of the three partner companies.
Expanding production, Samsung very subtly took care of the potential sales market – North America, where it quietly picked up a team of good managers, some of whom have already managed to work with competitors.
So far, however, it is not known what success the company has already achieved – Samsung announces only one of its clients, Qualcomm, for which the Korean manufacturer produces CDMA and W-CDMA chipsets in compliance with the 90nm process.
