Intel Technologies: First-ever Live HDTV from the Ocean Floor
Intel technologies enable live TV broadcast of an underwater volcano in the Pacific Ocean. The footage, transmitted from the ocean floor, showed a surreal world of gray volcanic liquid boiling at 700 degrees Fahrenheit (about 370 ° C), and clusters of microorganisms that have adapted to the harshest conditions on planet Earth.
“These TV shows provide a unique insight into the wonders of the ocean depths,” says Marge Cavanaugh of the US National Science Foundation.
The Visions 2021 expedition in late September provided scientists with the best imagery ever to observe undersea volcanoes located 320 km off the coast of Washington State and British Columbia. The footage of the underwater world was transmitted from a robotic underwater vehicle operating in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of more than 200 m.
The image was broadcast via satellite from the University of Washington oceanographic research vessel off the northwest coast of the United States to the University Computing Center in Seattle. There, using four systems based on an Intel Xeon processor with a clock frequency of 3.4 GHz,
very high volume of data received in real time.
The underwater camera captured the HDTV (High Definition Television) video stream, which provides more
