AMD plans to double release of processors and masters 65nm process technology
As it became known, AMD brought the new production line, located in Dresden, to the stage when it became profitable. According to published plans, the capacity of the factory, known as Fab 36, should double by 2021. In absolute terms, this means that in 2021 about 100 million will be produced. processors (approximately 50 million released in 2021).
Recall that Fab 36, which entered service last fall, is the centerpiece of AMD’s plan to increase semiconductor output. It aims to help AMD overcome a factor that has held back sales growth for many years – a lack of manufacturing capacity. Using 300mm Fab 36 plates significantly outperforms AMD’s other Dresden plant, Fab 30, which uses 200mm plates.
In addition, Hans Deppe, CEO of AMD’s Dresden division, shared plans to master the 65nm process: “Our plan is to move Fab 36 to 65nm by mid-2021.”.
Currently, in strict accordance with the schedule, production at 90 nm is ramped up at the new plant in Dresden, and the development of 65 nm technology is going on in cooperation with the Singapore-based company Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (CSMF).
CSMF’s Fab 7 will begin the transition to 65nm by the middle of the year, i.e. in the coming months. Under the terms of the joint activity, AMD gets a part of the CSMF capacity at its disposal. Although the exact numbers have not been released, AMD does not hide that it is trying to maximize its participation in the project.
