Intel Solution Services: Asklepios Barmbek Hospital of the Future
This hospital involuntarily brings to mind science fiction films: patients with RFID bracelets to track their whereabouts, doctors using tablets to record symptoms, nurses using a PDA to record key patient health indicators. Ambulance staff monitor patient flow and room availability in real time, and X-ray images are digitally captured in an electronic patient record.
These are all health technologies of tomorrow that already exist today at the Asklepios Barmbek Hospital in Hamburg, Germany. The new hospital is part of the network of 95 medical institutions of the private organization Asklepios Hospital Group, which operates in the USA and Germany.
Intel Solution Services (a division of Intel) acted as a consultant on the implementation of IT solutions. Together with Asklepios and the Digital Health Group, Intel Solution Services is currently implementing about 18 pilot projects and coordinating IT service providers to bring the e-hospital concept to the Asklepios network into practice.
The service specialists have developed an integrated IT infrastructure that provides a high level of standardization and significant flexibility not only for Barmbek Hospital, but also for the entire network of hospitals and clinics of the Asklepios Group. The ultimate challenge was to digitalize the work environment, reduce errors, increase efficiency and productivity, and ensure that doctors always have the information they need to make the right decisions.
All departments of the hospital are connected to each other by a network that provides doctors with secure access to patient data, both from the hospital and from other institutions. The hospital is also linked to an extensive medical network of rehabilitation clinics, other hospitals and private specialists. The hospital deployed a wireless network of 700 desktops and 150 mobile devices. Nurses can write information to electronic patient records right in the ward using tablet PCs with access to a wireless network. Instant data entry system avoids redundancy and possible errors when transferring information from paper to a computer. Research conducted by Intel has shown that each nurse saves two hours per shift with this method – two hours that can now be spent on patients instead of paperwork.
Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is used in a hospital for a variety of purposes, here are just a few:
- Tracking patient movements from one department to another for examinations and procedures. Thanks to RFID, hospital staff do not have to waste time searching for patients around the hospital building. In addition, patients can now always be accurately identified;
- Tracking the location of medical equipment, so that it can be used quickly, which is especially important in emergency situations;
- The use of identifiers on blood bags and the automatic verification of identifiers with patient records ensures that the blood used during operations is compatible with the patient’s blood;
- Use of IDs in the neonatal ward reduces the likelihood of baby replacement or abduction.
The hospital’s medical portal is a secure access point for authorized doctors who do not work in the hospital themselves, but whose patients need the services of this hospital. This solution allows doctors outside the hospital to receive and provide patient information, schedule appointments and consult with any other specialists in the network. Now doctors can always turn to the best specialists for advice, even if they are in another hospital.
The healthcare system is quite conservative: if we talk about the use of information technologies, then most hospitals in the world are about 10 years behind enterprises in other industries in terms of penetration of IT solutions. It is not necessary to say how far domestic hospitals are lagging behind in terms of their equipment, even in comparison with “backward” Western clinics. It remains to be hoped that someday our doctors will be able to use the full potential of information technology.
