ATI SB600: not long to wait

From the very moment of the announcement of NVIDIA’s acquisition of ULi, a variety of guesses and speculations have been circulating on the Web about what ATI will do after the loss of the Southbridge supplier for its chipsets.

It cannot be said that the gradual reduction in the supply of ULi products was an unbearable blow for ATI – the company was already developing its new south bridge and all that had to be done was to speed up this process. Which is exactly what has been done, and according to a source citing Billy Wang, ATI’s vice president for Asia-Pacific and China, the company will unveil the SB600 next month. In addition, Wong said that ATI has a production plan for this entire year – at the TSMC factories (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company).

The SB600 is expected to be used in motherboards on the RD580 that debuted on March 1, which now use the SB460. The SB600, which is pin-compatible with the SB460, according to some sources, will solve the problem with the connection speed of USB 2.0 and SATA. There is also evidence that the SB600 is already fully ready for launch in mass production and is now at the stage of driver debugging.
