Every year more and more ideas from science fiction become reality. A report published by Imperial College London and Neuchatel University (Switzerland) in the journal Nature Materials states that the developers were able to penetrate a solid material without damaging it, thus making it “transparent”.
At the moment, the effect can be observed only in laboratory conditions using specific materials, but the developers believe that in the future the laser will be able to replace X-rays and ultrasound, and it will be possible to “see” with it even through thick walls.
The material currently used consists of crystals only a few nanometers in size, forming a specific structure. When the laser beam hits the surface, it is not absorbed, but passes through the crystal layer. As a result, the obstacle becomes transparent to the laser.
The development calls into question the principle of “population inversion of energy levels”, formulated by Albert Einstein as one of the conditions necessary for light to pass through an obstacle. It lies in the fact that the atoms of the material (for example, this is true for crystal or glass) must have a certain charge in order to amplify the light, and not absorb it. The developers managed to achieve the passage of the laser through a material that does not have such a charge.
The second achievement of the joint development team from the two universities is that the material they create can potentially slow the speed of light to a complete stop. This could potentially, according to Professor Chris Philips, lead to the fact that the light can be “stored” in the material. Light pulses can be used in communication optical networks, where nothing will interfere with them.
