GPS chipset for mobile devices ANTARIS 4 – joint development of Atmel and u-blox

Atmel, a semiconductor development company, and European GPS designer u-blox AG have announced the release of the ANTARIS 4 chipset, representing a new generation of hardware that offers GPS functionality for mobile devices: PDAs, cell phones, universal players.

The features of ANTARIS 4, which determine its use in portable devices powered by batteries, are lower power consumption and high sensitivity of -158 dB in relation to the signal power of 1 mW. The chipset includes an ATR0621 (100-lead 9 x 9 mm BGA) processor manufactured using 0.18-micron CMOS technology and an ATR0601 RF module (QFN24 package, 4 x 4 mm) manufactured using BiCMOS technology. In tracking mode (refresh rate – 1 Hz), devices consume 62 mW. According to the developers, this is 40% lower than that of the previous generation. The availability of the FixNow power saving mode allows you to further extend the battery life of end devices. In addition, ANTARIS 4 requires a small number of external components, which simplifies the design, reduces its cost and dimensions. Like its predecessor, ANTARIS 4 is built on the basis of a 16-channel core, which implements GPS, Assisted-GPS (A-GPS), work with WAAS and EGNOS satellites.

In addition to serial ports, the ATR0621 processor is equipped with a USB port (emulating a standard COM port) for easy sharing with other hardware and software. Supports serial EEPROM.

An optional addition to the ATR0601 and ATR0621 “sweet couple” is the ATR0610 microcircuit – an integrated low-noise amplifier in a PLLP6 package with dimensions of 1.6 x 2.0 mm, made using SiGe technology. It allows you to design equipment designed to work in weak signal conditions, as well as optimize the cost of the device by simplifying the design of the receiving antenna.

The ATR0621 has a fully compatible replacement – ATR0620. The only difference between the two is that the software embedded in the ATR0620 is “hardcoded” in the integrated storage device. Thus, abandoning the possibility of “flashing”, it is possible to simplify the circuit by removing the external flash memory from it.

The prototype u-blox LEA-4P receiver, based on the new chipset, is a 17 x 22 mm (!). Despite its tiny size, the LEA-4P is functionally fully equivalent to the previous generation TIM-LP receiver, plus a USB port and flash memory.
