Nanostar: at the intersection of fundamental and applied science

As we have noted more than once, ferroelectric (ferroelectric) materials have long been of interest to researchers from the point of view of creating nonvolatile memory on their basis. However, ferroelectrics can be used to create not only storage devices – for example, Philips and Ericsson took part in a research project of the European Commission, the purpose of which is to develop tunable resonators and other elements for operation in the microwave range.

The project, named Nanostar (Nano-Structured Ferrolectric Films for Tuneable Acoustic Resonators and Devices), also includes representatives from the Swedish Chalmers University of Technology, Temex, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the Russian St. Petersburg Electrotechnical Institute. The project is supported by the European Commission under the FP6 program.

The source names barium titanate and strontium titanate as the most promising from the point of view of practical use – their dielectric constant, depending on the electric field strength, is quite high. On the basis of the listed materials, it is planned to create voltage-controlled capacitors and other tunable elements of microwave circuits. By the way, the same materials are also used to create ferroelectric memory, so the progress achieved in their miniaturization will be useful for creating small-sized and inexpensive high-frequency chips. On our own note, the last aspect is cost; known in comparison with gallium arsenide developments, which are technologically more complex.

In addition to a purely practical application – the creation of miniature varistors, the project also pursues goals that are interesting to academic research institutes – who knows what physical effects are destined to discover when studying ferroelectric nanostructures. Indeed, as it turns out, not all “white spots” are closed in semiconductors either – in particular, not all properties of quantum dots and periodic nanostructures are known.

Research work on the Nanostar project officially began on May 15 this year.
