Desktop market analysis: MCE share reaches half!

As we reported yesterday, Taiwanese manufacturers were very, very skeptical about the Viiv platform presented during the IDF, not considering it a serious threat to their decisions due to the high price.

However, the latest market analysis from the US shows that sales of PCs running Windows XP Media Center Edition, or PCs for the “digital home” – and this is the segment for which the Viiv platform is positioned, began to grow sharply from July this year and in some cases accounted for almost half of the total sales of personal computers. In particular, in the week ended August 20, 2021, the share of PCs running WXP MCE was 42.6%, while in the week ended July 2 of the same year, their share was only 16.28%.

There is a simple explanation for this phenomenon – in the summer, the price of systems for WXP MCE fell below the $ 900 mark for the first time, thanks to the fact that Microsoft, firstly, reduced the fees charged for the system, and secondly, began to provide discounts to large retail chains.

Analysts at Current Analysis, who have conducted market research, say an interesting observation (however, quite obvious for those who follow the market situation): desktop PCs have long needed such a unique application that would be difficult for laptops, otherwise in the near future the latter would be completely pushed out of the market. This application has become the Media Center system, which focuses on resource-intensive applications – manipulating images, audio and video content. Laptops are so far lagging behind desktop PCs in this area, so in the lineup of leading vendors, in particular, Hewlett-Packard (HP), the share of desktop PCs on Media Center is growing very quickly.
