High-speed smart cards handle multimedia data
Designers working in the framework of the FULL SPEED project, one of the directions of the IST program, have created a high-speed communication system based on USB. Its purpose is to combine media storage and transport with access control, which is said to allow consumers to link together interactive television, mobile devices, PCs. A feature of the novelty is the integration of applications into smart cards. In particular, we are talking about working with streaming audio (MP3) and video (MPEG2).
The smart card is based on a 32-bit processor that can run Java applications. It is entrusted with performing the tasks of cryptography and processing of multimedia data. According to the developer, the smart card supports several protocols and is built on the principles of an open architecture.
It is assumed that the combination in one platform of means of authorized access to multimedia applications, protection of personal data and user identification will bring a new quality to the infrastructure for the distribution of multimedia content. From a control point of view, the advantages of the innovation lie in the direct connection between the user identification means and the final application.
Moving from words to deeds, the developers demonstrated the work of a smart card with a stream of video data (“on-card streaming video”). Video stored on a server on the network was encrypted with a key that changed every 10 MB and then sent over Ethernet to the terminal device. The terminal decrypted data “on the fly” using a smart card connected to it via the FULL SPEED USB interface. The decrypted data went back to the terminal, where it was used for viewing.
The next step of the FULL SPEED project, its authors see the implementation of the developed interface for high-speed connection channels (ISO7816-12) in PCs and mobile communication equipment.
